By Louis Lambert [pen name for Patrick Gilmore] Scholars continue to argue whether "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" or the doleful "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye" is the original. "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" can be firmly dated to the beginning of the Civil War, while "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye" does not appear until lightly later (1869) -- but as a traditional song. The earliest known printing is, in fact, that of "Johnny Fill Up the Bowl" (early 1863). Included here as well known and suitable tune for square dance. |
When Johnny comes marching home again, Hurrah, hurrah We'll give him a hearty welcome then Hurrah, hurrah The men will cheer, the boys will shout The ladies they will all turn out And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home The old church bell will peal with joy Hurrah, hurrah, To welcome home our darling boy Hurrah, hurrah |
The village lads and lassies say With roses they will strew the way And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home. Get ready for the Jubilee We'll give the hero three times three The laurel wreath is ready now To place upon his loyal brow Let love and friends on that day Their choicest treasures then display And let each one perform some part To fill with joy each warrior's heart. |
