This collection includes around 4000 midi music files for traditional and folk songs. In most cases the lyrics are also included but mostly there are no chords marked. Songs from many genres will be found, including: bluegrass, old-time, Celtic (Irish, & Scottish), English, Welsh, Canadian, Australian, & American. Nearly all are from English speaking parts of the world, although there are a few foreign language items. The range of song subjects is huge, including: loves lost and found, bad men, good men, adventures, great events, protest & political, comedy, outlaws, in-laws, religious, inspirational, carols & hymns, etc, you name it, you will find it here.
The songs are accessed by clicking on a letter on the nav-bar, A for songs beginning A etc. Where song titles began with "A" or "The" these have mostly been omitted for indexing purposes, likewise punctuation in song titles has been omitted in link names to avoid server problems.
Each song page has a link to the midi for that song. These midis have only the basic melody, there is no backing. By default they will play with a piano sound but how they actually sound on your PC will depend on what player you have installed. If you can't hear any sound or want to make them sound better check my SUPPORT page for advice.
If you want scores and tablature for these songs look HERE for guitar tab or HERE for mandolin tab, both include standard notation. If you have suitable software you can convert these midi files into a musical score. Most notation software can do this for example Noteworthy Composer or my personal favourite, Harmony Assistant both do this quite well.
The song versions here are not intended to represent any particular version or performance and are provided for educational purposes only. As with most traditional music, a process know as "folk processing" occurs, which can result in many different versions of songs and tunes, so you may find more than one version of a song. This collection was derived from the Digital Tradition database at Mudcat Cafe and my thanks goes to them, and all those whose work contributed to making this collection possible.
Warning, this collection includes a few bawdy songs, the lyrics of which may cause offense.
