About This Book
This book, like those of John Lomax has become one of the standard reference works on American folk music. It is a compilation of traditional songs and tunes collected and transcribed by Sharpe and Campbell from the Southern Appalachian area of the United States in the early 1900's. Along with Lomax's work, it should probably be considered to be one of the main secondary source books for American traditionan folk song, and has also been a contributing factor to the popularity of folk music and its various revivals since its first publication in 1917.
